Is this still active? This is a very good way to improve your English, IMO. Maybe like some of you, I started learning real English by playing online games with non Spanish-speaking people. Spoken English came later, when visiting other countries, but for written English this is fine.

Just suggest any topic for a new conversation... :grindance:

Haha, playing online games in english it's good method, I watch films and series in VOS (Original Version Subtitled) and later, in VO (Original Version)

I think that's the best method.

Sin más.

PS: Es normal tener errores, así que es normal que nos corrijamos, que a nadie le siente mal y que por eso no lo intente.

To be honest, I can't understand movies if I just watch them in English with no subtitles. I learned a lot of good pronunciation while watching movies as you say, with English voice, but with subtitles you can read. This way you can associate pronunciation-writting and it makes it easier. Repeat it, or freak with somebody about the movie :) in English, ofc.

But that has just one problem: it does NOT make you fluent when speaking another language. The only thing you can do to improve that is travel to another country and then speak English there, 24/7. If you don't die of starvation, you'll learn a lot, and it'll make you much faster, I promise.

And, of course, if you enjoy just speaking in other language, that makes the whole process much faster/easier.

One tiny correction: "playing online games in english it's good method" - Do not use "it" there, as it's supposed to be the subject of the sentence. The subject already is "playing online games in English".

Well, I don't have a choice but to speak English, since my very basic German is not practical to communicate with (it's hard for me to understand even just numbers, don't talk about understanding complex guidelines on how to work...).

Before I came here I thought German people were, in general, good with languages. And they are, at least much better than Spanish people. It's nice to see some old people (say 50 yo and above) speaking proper English. But the problem is that most of the times, they pronounce Deutschglish (probably just as Spanish people with Spanglish), and they are not that fluent when speaking English.

They can read and write pretty good. However, I'm working in the computer department of the Hospital in Freiburg. People whose duties have to do with computers are supposed to have a minimun English knowledge and skill, at least with written English, but when it comes to talk and listen, their skill falls to lower levels. Maybe in the "outside world", where people does not work with computers, English skill is just acceptable.

So, I would say: they are better than Spanish people (let's be realistic, that's not very hard), but if you can't speak German, the language will be an issue, no doubt about it, the dificulty of communication will depend on both your and their skill with English. They still have to improve their language skills.

The funny point is that there are a lot of people interested in learning Spanish in Germany (remember, they love Mayorca -really, even they have that cliché from themselves-), so if you're lucky you will deal with one and everything will be easier. At the moment I don't deal with any spanish-speaking German in my daily life in Germany, but I've met some of them here.

Anyway, I've heared that Germany is the best choice when it comes to learn English outside English-speaking countries. That's not because of no reason I guess, and just the fact of communicating 24/7 in English is enough to make you better, even if this is not Ireland, UK, US, etc.

I want to ask... Have any of you ever been to another countries? Which ones?

I think that the best country to learn languages is actually Belgium. In Belgium you can see people who speak in dutch, english, french, german... because there are lots of influences of other countries.

My best friend is belgian and he says that if you go to belgium and you can just speak one language, it's gonna be so much hard to find a job ( He can speak 7 languages perfectly ).

anyway,
see you soon!

Now I read my last message again I've just realized it's a monster tl;dr... Sorry for that.

But I will re-ask... Have any of you ever been to another countries? Which ones? And, how many languages can you speak?

I did not know that about Belgium, interesting. Something like that happens in Switzerland, which is just 70 km aprox. from where I am: English, German, Italian and French are spoken there.

I can speak English and Spanish, so for me those places where a lot of languages are spoken seem so creepy :grindance: maybe not creepy, but puzzling. The feeling of being unable to understand anyone sometimes is so frustrating... duh~

My aim right now is to learn Esperanto (funny, isn't it? Just because it's very easy) and then I will resume Deutsch lernen. My plans for the future go through learning Japanese and maybe French, but I doubt about this last one.

Regards.
